Today’s showcase on TeenagePhotographer is on a photographer with a style unlike I’ve ever seen! 22 year old Federica Giordano from Livorno, Italy! She’s entirely self-taught, and makes use of editing software to create dream-like compositions in her surrealistic fashion-oriented photography.
How would you describe your style?
I define my style as surreal, inspired by my visions and dreams.
You have a very unique style. Have you always shot photos like this, or did you start out shooting something else?
This style of photography is relatively new to me. When I started taking photos,I didn’t have Photoshop on my computer and I didn’t even know what a texture was! I began to take photos of my friends, which helped me learn a lot more about composition and working with models. I learned Photoshop through the internet! In the last 3 months, I’ve refined my techniques and style, and these are the results!
What do you try to accomplish with your photos?
I want my photos to create a magic atmosphere that people can perceive at first glance when looking at my work. I try to express my feelings, and show the imaginary world in my mind with my photos.

What do you currently shoot with? Why?
I changed my camera recently and I bought a Canon EOS 7D! My current lens is an EF-S 18-135 mm but I hope to buy soon a new lens specifically for portraiture! It would be great to buy a 50 mm 1.8 F. I also have a tripod and a remote shutter release.
You’re stranded on an island with one camera, one lens, and one accessory… What do you bring?
I’d bring with me my current equipment: my canon EOS7d, lens EF-S 18-135 mm and… never go out without the tripod! The 18-135 is very versatile, and it’d be a great lens in a variety of situations.
What made you interested in photography, and when did you start?
I loved photography ever since I was a kid. The first aspect of photography that impressed me was its enormous power to freeze moments and preserve memories. My passion for it began to evolve at the age of 18 when I received my first camera as a gift. From that moment on I realized that there it something more than just snapping a picture.. Photography began to have a different impact on me. A year later I had the desire to amplify my knowledge about it and that’s why my parents decided to buy me my first DSLR. Later, I joined a photography course but almost everything I know I learned on the web, thanks to the people who shared their knowledge for free.
What’s your editing process like? What do you use to edit?
In order to create the final photo, I take many photos to use as the background, as well as objects to add to it. I use photoshop to mix the many layers and textures I’ve created, and then change the tones and saturation until I’m satisfied.
What are your future ambitions with photography?
I have many goals for my future: I would like to join other photography courses and fashion photography workshops to expand my experience. Obviously, my most ambitious goal is become a professional fashion and conceptual portrait photographer.

What inspires you most? You have many unique compositions. Are these right from your head, or were you influenced by something/someone?
I find inspiration in everything around me especially music, books and films. I have no doubt that other talented photographers like Lissy Elle and Miss Aniela inspired me, but the final compositions that I create are what comes to me, not reproductions.
Where are you from? Does where you live influence your work?
I’m based in Italy and currently I live in Livorno: a city in Tuscany near the sea. Where I live is beautiful but hasn’t influenced my works too much. I’ve been in Rotterdam three times and it inspired me a lot. The last time I went there it was the last November and just walking in the parks full of red and yellow leaves fallen to the ground, it was like an explosion of colors in my mind.
